Are Meridians Real?

In the early 1980s, in order to deepen the research into meridians,  the Chinese National Science Committee, in co-operation with the Department of Health, set up a project, "Objective Monitoring and Location of Fourteen Meridians."

At this time, meridian experts decided to research methods of objectively detecting meridians, using modern technology. Professor Wang Pingshan of Liaonin Chinese Medical Institute was the first to use resonance. After setting up a volunteer with a sensitive microphone and using a small rubber hammer low frequency sound waves could be detected on other points of a meridian, after first tapping a point of the same meridian.
Another method of detecting meridians was discovered by the Chinese Medical Search Institute of China. They used electrical resistance, and using a very sensitive low voltage amp meter found the electrical resistance of the skin is lower along a meridian line. Recent studies in the US and Europe have confirmed these findings. This discovery has been recognised and repeated by scientists worldwide.

Two other main methods for detecting meridians have been found by scientists in the US and Europe, one is that light reflects more brightly along a meridian, when a meridian point is activated by acupuncture. The other is that by using infra red heat sensing equipment temperature changes along a meridian line were detected when a meridian point was activated. This has pushed meridian research into a new phase. Whilst it does not seem possible at this stage to have something physical to examine, Traditional Chinese Medicine researchers, believe they may yet find something in the nature of a very fine transparent vessel.

In our medical meridian health dvd titled “423 Meridian Qi Gong” we demonstrate briefly the resonance method of locating meridian lines. The resonance along the meridian line can be clearly heard as well as the loss of resonance when the striking hammer is moved even slightly off line. This test requires a careful and time consuming set up process, so it is hard to duplicate. Consequently we devote most of our demonstration time to the electrical resistance method of locating and tracking the meridians. This test is easily duplicated by anyone who has the use of a very low voltage amp meter of the type Prof. Liu was using.

In this demonstration Prof. Liu locates and tracks a meridian line on camera. This was an interesting experience enjoyed by all those who voluntered, with differing reponses to the sensation of  very low voltage running down their meridian lines. In every volunteer Prof. Liu was able to locate and trace their meridian lines. There can be no doubt that the meridian pathways are real. Using several alternative methods, developed in different countries, our technology can locate and trace these meridian pathways through our bodies. It would seem that Traditional Chinese Medicine had it right all along.
